Why Professional Tarping Outperforms DIY Attempts

Securing a tarp with cinder blocks, bricks, or loose roofing nails is ineffective in Central Texas winds. During thunderstorm gusts, unsecured tarps act like sails, tearing loose and damaging surrounding intact shingles.

Independent contractors utilize the batten-sandwich installation method:

  • Ridge Overlap: The tarp is carried over the peak of the roof whenever possible so that water drains over the top of the material rather than seeping behind the upper edge.
  • Furring Strip Anchorage: 2x4 or 1x3 lumber battens wrap the edges of high-grade UV-resistant woven polyethylene, distributing fastener tension evenly.
  • Minimal Nail Penetrations: Fasteners are driven into framing members and existing damaged areas, avoiding needless puncture holes in undamaged roofing sections.

Safety Warning: Never attempt to install a tarp yourself on a wet, damaged roof. Loose granules, unseen decking rot, and steep pitches create severe fall hazards.
